The physics of forgetting: Landauer’s erasure principle and information theory
نویسنده
چکیده
This article discusses the concept of information and its intimate relationship with physics. After an introduction of all the necessary quantum mechanical and information theoretical concepts we analyse Landauer’ s principle which states that the erasure of information is inevitably accompanied by the generation of heat. We employ this principle to rederive a number of results in classical and quantum information theory whose rigorous mathematical derivations are di cult. This demonstrates the usefulness of Landauer’ s principle and provides an introduction to the physical theory of information.

From Quantum Mechanics Postulate to Landauer’s Erasure Principle
Landauer argues that since erasure is a logical function that does not have a single-valued inverse it must be associated with physical irreversibility and therefore require heat dissipation. It is widely accepted that quantum mechanics is our most accurate description of our world. Can Landauer’s erasure principle be deduced by the quantum mechanics if we accept the completeness of quantum the...
متن کاملThe Holevo bound and Landauer’s principle
Landauer’s principle [1] states that the erasure of classical information leads to an increase in the entropy of the environment by at least the same amount. The importance of this principle is the insight that it is not the act of obtaining information that necessarily generates heat and therefore entropy, but the erasure of information. This profound insight has led to the resolution of the p...

This talk addressed the following questions in the public debate at HoTPI: (i) energy dissipation limits of switches, memories and control; (ii) whether reversible computers are possible, or does their concept violate thermodynamics; (iii) Szilard’s engine, Maxwell’s demon and Landauer’s principle: corrections to their exposition in the literature; (iv) whether Landauer’s erasure– dissipation p...
متن کاملInformation Erasure and the Generalized Second Law of Black Hole Thermodynamics
We consider the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics in the light of quantum information theory, in particular information erasure and Landauer’s principle (namely, that erasure of information produces at least the equivalent amount of entropy). A small quantum system outside a black hole in the Hartle-Hawking state is studied, and the quantum system comes into thermal equilibriu...
متن کاملEaters of the lotus: Landauer’s principle and the return of Maxwell’s demon
Landauer’s principle is the loosely formulated notion that the erasure of n bits of information must always incur a cost of k ln n in thermodynamic entropy. It can be formulated as a precise result in statistical mechanics, but for a restricted class of erasure processes that use a thermodynamically irreversible phase space expansion, which is the real origin of the law’s entropy cost and whose...
